Silurian Trail

Rob Ward 1983

You could argue I'm cheating a bit putting this one on here, as it never actually happened. Rob Ward himself tells the story:

"The sculpture was to be made in bronze and was to depict the whole walk with images and objects taken from the trail and worked into the map. It was meant to stand outside the entrance and visitor centre. Unfortunately the then-curator Bill Grant didn't want something made in a different medium to wood. It was not possible to do it any other way than casting and the idea was never made. It would be nice to revisit it."

Although Bill Grant went cold on the piece, the paintings above were displayed and give an idea of the shape of the proposed work. It's a shame it never saw the light of day, but here, at least, is a picture which allows us to imagine what the finished article may have looked like.
