Only One Fish Left

Karl Ciesluk 1996

In a move that must have proved pretty handy for the artist himself, all three of Karl Ciesluk's sculptures were located within ten minutes of each other. 'Only One Fish Left' was situated in the small tarn just next to Grizedale Tarn. This second tarn is nestled in the trees just a few hundred metres to the east of Grizedale Tarn, hidden away like its unfavoured sibling. There is much to like here though; it's an equally beautiful spot to Grizedale Tarn and is much quieter, although the path to it has become slightly overgrown in recent years, since the artwork was removed.

This piece by Ciesluk mimics an identical one, located in a lake in his native country of Canada. It was a strangely sad piece, a single wooden fish peeping serenely above the water line, with its reflection completing the picture. It disappeared around the turn of the century, like so many other sculptures at Grizedale.
