Only Breath

Steve Anwar's 'Only Breath' was one of the three entrants for Sky Arts' television series, 'Landmark', and it actually won the northern heat, making it through to the final. The story behind it is an interesting one; as well as being based on the poem of the same name by the Sufi poet Rumi, it was also inspired by Anwar's own illness, which saw him bedridden for several years, during which he adopted yoga and breathing techniques to help aid his recovery.

A Sheffield-born artist who trades under the name Sapien, his work has previously been on show at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and Anwar cast 'Only Breath' from (what else?) steel. The piece was sited in a great spot not too far from Moor Top, with a commanding view of the valley which heightens the impact of the work, especially when approached from the north.

'Only Breath' reached the final of 'Landmark', but in the end it lost out to Favour Johnathan's 'In Honour of Ira Frederick Aldridge', a sculpture of a man holding out a clock at arm's length, which was subsequently sited on the roof of one of Coventry's biggest buildings (formerly an Ikea, no less). It's unclear what will happen to the three Sky Arts sculptures sited at Grizedale - they are contracted to remain in place for a year, but who knows? 'Only Breath' was unlucky not to win the grand prize, but it would perhaps be a little lost among urban surroundings anyway. In Grizedale, it may have found its true home without even trying.
